MSTS Speaker Night

The McMaster Materials Student Technical Society had the pleasure of hosting Mike Chatzidakis, a McMaster alumnus. Mike graduated with his B.Eng in 2016 and his M.A.Sc. in 2018. He shared his journey through undergrad and graduate studies and offered words of wisdom to current students. He also shared how his experiences have led him to his current role as a Data Scientist at the Toronto-based startup Shoebox.
Tour of Stelco

The McMaster MSTS partnered with the Engineering Co-op and Career Services (ECCS) to offer a tour of Stelco. Undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculty of Engineering were invited to tour the steel shop, where students got to see the Desulphurization Station, Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Furnace, Secondary Steelmaking Station (which includes the ladle treatment station and the vessel degasser), and the Caster.
Resume Making Workshop

The McMaster MSTS held its second annual resume making workshop for students who would soon be graduating or looking to apply for internships. This informative workshop was hosted by Shannon Clark from ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Students were guided on how to properly construct a resume based on industry needs and had a chance to discuss one-on-one with Shannon to work towards refining current resumes.
Prior to the workshop a social was held, bringing undergraduate and graduate students together in a relaxed environment where food and beverages were enjoyed by all.
Tuesday February 20 - Thursday February 22, 2018
The McMaster MSTS held a casting workshop sponsored by MetSoc of CIM. The workshop included the installation of the casting software on our personal laptops for a 45 day evaluation and training on casting simulating softwares: SOLIDCast™ for solidification defects; FLOWCast™ for metal flow related defects and OPTICast™ to optimize metal yield % and process parameters automatically. Training was be done by David Schmidt from Finite Solutions Inc. (USA) and François Audet from Foundry Solutions Metallurgical Services Inc. (technical support for Canada).
Coffee, snacks, and lunch were included for students participating in the workshop, allowing a networking opportunity for students.
MSTS Speaker Night

McMaster Materials Students Technical Society had the pleasure of hosting Rob Martin, General Manager, Metallurgy, Quality, and Continuous Improvement at ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Rob gave a presentation to us about his career in ferrous metallurgy and the past, present, and future of the steel industry.
Following the presentation, Rob, other AMD employees (including recent graduates and an HR representative) and student members gathered together for a social evening.
Rob Martin is the General Manager, Metallurgy, Quality and Continuous Improvement at ArcelorMittal Dofasco. He received his Bachelors Degree in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill University in 1990. He began his professional career at Dofasco in 1990 working in a variety of roles in Manufacturing Technology in both the Hot Mill and Galvanize areas. Rob held the position of Manager of Product Metallurgy between 1999 and 2006, after which he was appointed to the position of Business Unit Manager in Galvanize Technology. In 2015, Rob was appointed to his current position of General Manager, Metallurgy, Quality and Continuous Improvement. Over his 27-year career, Rob has played a leadership role in various strategic initiatives in the areas of New Product Development, Quality Improvement, Business Systems, and World Class Continuous Improvement. Prior to his recent appointment, Rob was the Manufacturing Process Manager for the #6 Galvanize Line project responsible for the commissioning and rampup of the new facility. He is also a member of the CanmetMATERIALS for Innovation Advisory Committee.
Resume Making Workshop

A 1.5 hour workshop for students who would soon be graduating hosted by Shannon Clark from ArcelorMittal Dofasco. During this workshop students worked towards refining current resumes and worked towards properly constructing their resumes based on industry needs.
MSTS Meet and Greet
October 19, 2017
McMaster MSTS had its first get together event with materials science and engineering students. Over 40 students attended the event. Ms. Shannon Clark and Ms. Maria Cipriani from ArcelorMittal Dofasco also attended the evening event and awarded prizes to students for participating in a questionnaire. They also gave an introduction of the Materials Advantage chapter to students.
